From the Desk of the Principal:

Goodbye to TAKS for another year!!!!

Thank goodness we finished TAKS, and now maybe we can get back to work in our regular subjects. Our students did a great job of handling the unusual schedule that TAKS testing requires. A special thanks to our parents and students. We almost had 100% attendance for the classes taking tests.

This has been a great spring so far. Our Academic team won the Regional Championship, and several members of our team are headed to the State Championship in Austin the first week of May. Congratulations to them and their sponsors led by Pat Gatons.

As usual our athletic teams are doing very well. Our Girls Track team won District, our Boys finished second, both the Varsity and Junior Varsity won District in Tennis, and both our Boys and Girls Golf teams won District. Our softball and baseball teams are in the hunt for playoff spots with must-win games tonight.

The school year is very quickly coming to an end. We need to really encourage our students to finish strong and do their very best during the last few weeks of school. The SENIORS are ready to graduate. They also need to be encouraged to finish strong and complete the job they started 13 years ago.

I would like to add that it is a great honor for me to serve as your principal next year. If I can help you in any way please feel free to call me.

Annual Twirler Workshop Held
submitted by Karen Hagler

Twirler workshopOn 1/27/2007 the high school twirler & flag lines had the annual Spring Hill Twirler & Flag Workshop. This workshop is a one day event for girls of all ages to learn how to control a baton or flag, fundamentals, learn a routine, or thinking about trying for a twirler or flag position. This workshop is the last Saturday of January each year. After seeing what fundamentals each girl can do we place them in a Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Level class to learn a routine. At lunch time everyone has pizza and water and then goes right back to work to brush up on the routines. Before the show begins each girl receives a Spring Hill Twirler & Flag Workshop t-shirt in which to perform their routine. During the Show Off performance each group performs the routine they learned to parents, friends, etc. at the end of the day.

SkillsUSA Team Represents SH at State Level
submitted by Guy Fuller

SkillsUSA TeamThe Spring Hill High School SkillsUSA Manufacturing Chapter 2053 attended the Texas SkillsUSA State Championships in Corpus Christi on March 28-30. The group brought home 10 First Place Superior Blue Ribbons for Welding and Woodworking Projects. One student, Stephen Pliler, got the 3rd Place State Bronze Medal in Intro-Welding Skills-Speed competition. The students had to place first at the district level to qualify to compete at the state level. Therefore, all of the students were representing not only SHHS, but also District 5. The students had been working on the projects since the third week of school. They had to learn how to arc weld, MIG weld, and cut metal using the oxy-acetylene cutting torch before they could start their projects. The projects varied in size from a decorative flower-pot rack to a large barbecue pit/smoker built on a trailer. The students put in many extra hours after school and on weekends to learn to weld and complete their projects. "Most students do not reach this level of proficiency in welding their first year in metal shop" said Guy Fuller, Industrial Arts Teacher. The students provided most of their on materials for their projects. Some of the students went out and got donations from area business to help complete their projects. Jennings Scrap and Salvage donated pipe and other metal to help build the bbq pit/smoker trailer. Paint Etc donated carpet to help complete the deer blind. Donnell Pipe donated pipe for the deer blind.

The state champions and projects are listed as follows:

Alex Myers Bakers Rack
Travis Pope Barbecue Pit/Smoker on a Trailer
Anthony Domino
Stephen Pliler
Tyler Buttler Barbecue Pit
Tawney Offutt Woodworking Occasional End Table
Dillon Huffman Deer Blind
Nick Valenti
