From the Desk of the Principal:

TAKS TESTS are COMING!!!!

Thank goodness TAKS is just around the corner.  Our students and teachers are doing a great job of preparing, and I believe we will be very successful. As you know TAKS testing requires some unusual daily schedules. On Monday, April 27th, grades 10 and 11 will be taking the TAKS Social Studies test; on Tuesday, April 28th, grade 10 will take the Math TAKS test; on Wednesday, April 29th, grade 11 will be taking the Math TAKS test; and on April 30th, grade 9 will be taking the Math TAKS test, and grades 10 and 11 will be taking the Science TAKS test. It is a challenge for us to provide for those not being tested on those days, but Paige Childers as usual is prepared.  The students will be informed about procedures to be used for those who are not testing.

This has been a great spring so far. Our Academic team won the District Championship, and 23 members of our team have advanced to the Regional Championships in Blinn on April 24th and 25th.  Congratulations!!!

As usual our athletic teams are doing very well. Both the Boys and Girls Varsity won District in Tennis, both our Boys and Girls Golf teams won District, and our Girls Track team won District.  Our softball and baseball teams are in the hunt for playoff spots. By the way, the baseball team is rated #2 in Class 3A in the State. The school year is very quickly coming to an end. We need to really encourage our students to finish strong and do their very best during the last few weeks of school. I want to emphasize that we really need each and every student to be present every day for the rest of the school year. The SENIORS are ready to graduate. They also need to be encouraged to finish strong and complete the job they started 13 years ago.

I would like to add that it is a great honor for me to serve as your Principal.  If I can help you in any way please feel free to call me.

Leaders' Core Serves Community in Various Ways this Spring
submitted by Chris Lattier and Garrett Watkins

The Leaders’ Core is wrapping up the school year with multiple fundraisers and events. They have joined forces with the Student Council to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  By working at Mazzio’s and Chick-Fil-A, plus working concession at four Spring Hill track meets, they have managed to earn $1,400, and they won’t stop there. The organizations will participate with Relay for Life this Friday at the high school football field, with a goal of raising $2,000. Anyone interested in donating to ACS can contact a member of either organization.

The Leaders’ Core also managed to participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Asbury House, in which they hid Easter eggs for the children and provided them Easter snacks. On April 27, Leaders’ Core will also help with the Habitat for Humanity bike ride in memory of John Fitzpatrick.

Last but certainly not least, the long anticipated Sprayground is currently being built. After years of fundraising and hard work, the Sprayground will be a great addition to the Spring Hill community and will be open to the public on May 20. Please join us for the celebratory reception and ribbon cutting for the grand opening.

Student Council Spring Activities
submitted by Carrie Jones

Student CouncilStudent Council has been quite busy this semester. They have been cleaning our community and raising money. On April 4, Student Council participated in the Longview Citywide Cleanup for the second time this school year. They did a great job cleaning up and down Spring Hill Road, especially by the school. On April 8, all of Student Council wore blue to bring attention to the plight of abused children during Child Abuse Awareness Week. The school also dedicated a moment of silence to the same cause.

Student CouncilThe Student Council and Leaders Core joined together in quite a few fund raisers to raise money for Relay for Life which will be held at Spring Hill High School Stadium on April 17th. Both organizations worked on April 7 at Mazzio’s and April 14 at Chick fil a. Both businesses donated 10% of the profits from those nights to the Relay. The council and leaders core also worked together during track meets, solicited pledges and sold luminaria to raise money for the Relay. The Student Council and Leader’s Core are hoping to donate at least $2000.00 to make a difference in the lives of cancer victims.

Twirler & Flags Workshop
submitted by Karen Hagler

The 8th Annual Spring Hill High School Twirler & Flag Workshop was held on Saturday February 7, 2009, at the Jr. High Campus.  We had over 60 girls of all ages participate to either start learning or to learn more about how to twirl a baton or flag.  First we covered the the fundamentals in order to see which level routine(Beginner,  Intermediate, or Advanced) would be best for the girls to learn.  After lunch each group polished their routines, and we handed out the girls Workshop t-shirt for the Show-Off Performance that was held in the auditorium.  I would like to thank the secretaries and teachers at the Primary, Intermediate, Middle School, and Jr. High Campuses for helping me get the application information out and returned for this event. We hope to see you at next year's Workshop on the First Saturday in February.  Twirling or Flag lessons are available.  Ages for twirling lessons start at Pre-K and up, and Flag lessons start at 5th grade and up.  For more information please call 903-738-4803.
