From the Desk of the Principal:

The end of another school year is here. The 2006/2007 school year has been a great year for both academic and athletic accomplishments. Can you believe that Spring Hill High School is the 2007 CLASS AAA STATE ACADEMIC TEAM CHAMPIONS? Our congratulations go to each of the students that made that possible. We also have the honor of having the 2007 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPION GIRLS DOUBLES TENNIS TEAM. Congratulations to Ashley Collier and Melanie Prince for securing that championship. Also I don't think I know of another high school that has appeared in the playoffs in every sport, both boys and girls. What a great tribute to our kids and to our athletic department led by Coach Robert Bero. The Band simply racked up another sweepstakes year. Congratulations to Mr. Barnes and his students. There are so many other areas that have brought Spring Hill into the spotlight for positive things that I could not possibly list them all.

The state TAKS scores came back. The 11th grade scores were good (94% in English, 90% in Math, 88% in Science, and 96% in Social Studies). The rest of the scores were good, and they will be announced in June. I am very proud of the students and faculty for all their hard work this year. By the way, mentioning faculty members reminds me that we are losing some very valuable members of our staff. Debbie Carter an excellent English teacher, Jeff Sims, our Government teacher and Student Council sponsor, Tracy Dees, one of our Counselors, and Pat Gatons, our Academic Team sponsor and Chemistry teacher. Also I would like to mention that Kayla Lindsey, one of our math teachers is moving into Tracy's position as Counselor. Congratulations to her.

The Senior Class of 2007 would like to invite everyone to attend the Sixty-Fourth Commencement Program Friday, May 25. Many of the accomplishments listed above are due to the leadership of the Class of 2007. We are very proud of all of our seniors and wish them the best as they begin the next stage of their life. Congratulations to the Class of 2007 and good luck!!

Thanks to all of you for a great year!!!

ValedictorianAfter juggling full schedules, homework and sports, the results have paid off. At graduation, on May 25, Brian Bass and Shana Boyd will represent the senior class as valedictorian and salutatorian.

They are both 13 year Panthers, and have had much inspiration from family members and friends.

"I went to my cousin's graduation when I was little, and I asked my mom why two people had to give a speech at the beginning," Bass said. "She told me they were the Val and Sal and at that point I wasn't wild about giving a speech but thought it would be neat to graduate number one."

Bass and Boyd similarly described some of their views on life and what motivated them to achieve this honor.

"My dad always, always says if you're going to do something, do it 100% and the best you can do," Boyd said. "I guess that was a big part of my motivation."

Bass has been active the last four years in numerous school organizations including athletics, band, NHS, and UIL academics. He has been a two year member of the varsity basketball team, an all-state percussionist and has won numerous UIL awards, including a number sense state championship. In addition, he is an active member of Greggton Methodist Church, an Eagle Scout and has played competitive club soccer for many years.

SalutatorianBoyd has participated in a variety of organizations throughout high school including Student Council, Leaders' Core, NHS and FCA. In NHS and Student Council, she served as vice president and secretary, respectively. She has been a three year member of the varsity softball team, earning all-district, all-East Texas and all-state honors. She was voted to the homecoming court all four years of high school. He class also nominated her for class favorite during her junior year, as well as for class president her junior and senior years.

Both Bass and Boyd agree that their family had a lot to do with this achievement.

"My parents were always excited about academic achievements," Boyd said. "So sharing my goal of salutatorian with them made me work that much harder."

Even though it could be tough at times, especially when they did not get the grades they wanted, neither of them felt pressure by anyone.

"I have always made A's, when I was younger I got really upset when I made a bad grade," Bass said. "I have a better perspective on life now and know that one grade is not that big of a deal, but I would be very disappointed if I made a B this far into high school."

Bass will be attending Texas A&M University as a biomedical engineering major.

"I have always wanted to go to A&M. Both of my parents went there," Bass said. "Since I was little, it has really been my only college choice. I love the atmosphere at athletic events, they have a strong academic program, nice facilities, and I like that it is not packed into the middle of a major city."

Boyd will be attending the University of Colorado at Boulder majoring in business while working towards a dentistry degree.

"The pre-med advisor is really personal," Boyd said. "She has stayed in touch with me helping me make decisions. They also have a great pre-med program."

Bass and Boyd's advice for underclassmen is to get involved in the school and take the hardest classes. Whether students choose to take Kilgore College dual credit courses or AP courses offered at the school, the classes can certainly be beneficial and of great help when going off to college.

"Get involved in extracurricular activities whether it is band, UIL or athletics. I'm looking forward to college and the opportunities it will bring but there are some opportunities you can only set in high school," Bass said. "Also, do not be afraid to challenge yourself. Just do your best, that's all anyone could ever ask."

Eastman Makes Offer to First Spring Hill Graduate
for High School Co-op Program

submitted by Fran Scott

Eastman Award RecipientAs part of Eastman's high school co-op program, Joe Bill has been offered full-time summer employment as a maintenance helper in the electrical field at Eastman Chemical Company. Joe will be the first graduate from Spring Hill that is being offered this employment and educational opportunity. The co-op program can lead to a full two year college scholarship with a major in instrumentation and a chance to co-op for part-time employment while in college. Following college graduation, he will have the potential for full-time employment at Eastman. Joe's parents toured Eastman recently during the Texas State Technical College parent night. " After being in the work program for two years, I am excited and proud for Joe Bill to have this opportunity at both employment and a full scholarship. Only a few students are selected from the East Texas area high schools by Eastman for the program. It is an honor for Spring Hill to have a student selected" according to DCP coordinator Fran Scott.
