From the Desk of Mike Gilbert:

The 2006/2007 school year is well on its way, and the high school is in full swing. We have a full slate of activities in progress, and I am excited about the future successes of our students. With the new year, comes new faces in the faculty and student body. We have seven new teachers at the high school and all are doing a great job. The high school enrollment is almost 530 students, which is 30 more that the end of last year.

The high school is using a new electronic gradebook and attendance system that will enhance our ability to monitor student progress on a daily basis. In the near future we will introduce a component of the system that will allow parents to look at their student's grades and attendance from home. Students that keep their grades up and those that have perfect attendance each grading period get their name in the hat for cash prize drawings.

Make sure you keep up with all that is happening at the high school by reading the newsletter. As you can tell, there's a lot more happening at Spring Hill High School than just going to class. (We do go to class!) Academics, sports, fine arts, clubs and organizations offer this student body the opportunity to get involved. Come be a part of Spring Hill High School, and support our young people. I think you will be pleased with what you see.

Go Panthers!

submitted by Holly Whittington

Style Show

The curtains rise again as our group is once more planning its bi-annual fashion show. The date is tentatively set for November 13th at 7:30. The funds earned from the event will be applied towards the water sprayground to be constructed in the new Spring Hill Park at the corner of Fenton and George Richey. Tickets will go on sale the last week of October and will be $5.00 each pre-sale, and $6.00 at the door.

Brick Sales

If you have visited the high school over the past two years, you probably noticed the improved entrance, Panther Plaza. This was a project of the Leaders' Core, and, the group is offering engraved bricks one last time.

The funds from the bricks will also support the water playground at the new park. The engraved bricks are available for a $100 donation. Each brick can be engraved up to three lines with 15 characters per line. By purchasing one of these bricks, you will be remembered as part of Spring Hill's community for many years to come.

Attached is a brick order form that can be completed and returned to the Leaders' Core at the High School or to Holly Whittington, Director. If you have any questions, you may contact any Leaders' member or Holly Whittington at 903-323-7867. Our tentative deadline for ordering bricks is October 31, 2006.

On behalf of Spring Hill Leaders' Core, we appreciate all contributions

Student Projects Enhance School Surroundings

Interior Design Students Welcome Freshmen

As an incoming freshman, finding your spot may take a while but the whole process has been made a bit less intimidating thanks to the hard work and efforts of interior design students Jessica Burt, Christina Dulweber, Stefanie Kirschke and Sara Achnetzer. Directions were given for every 9th grader to design/decorate paper that reflected their interests, favorites, school extra-curricular involvement, etc. These brightly colored circles were returned to interior design students and incorporated into a window display at the entrance to the H.S. Not only does the eye- catching arrangement show the versatility, interests, and involvement of incoming freshmen but gives the entrance a much needed jolt of color that says " SHHS has a lot to offer... get involved !"

This display is the only the first of several that will be changed through out the fall. The project allows students an opportunity to apply skills and knowledge learned in class while benefitting the school as a whole. The interior design class owes a huge thanks to Mrs. McGarvey for so graciously distributing information to all freshmen through her English class.

Apparel Classes Gotcha Covered

Coach Mauldin shows off new window treatmentAfter learning the basics of using a machine, apparel students used their new skills to construct window treatments for several teachers at the high school. Teachers jumped at the chance to spiff up their rooms for a nominal fee of purchasing needed supplies. After mastering operation of machines and basic construction skills students are eager to tackle future projects. Both guys and girls have been pleasantly surprised at the practical aspects of mastering these new skills. Students have repaired personal items, made gifts for friends or customized t-shirts . Personalized pillow cases , towel wraps , pajama pants and duffle/tote bags will be just a few of the items students will construct over the semester.

Math-Science Team Hopeful for Trip to State
submitted by Pat Gatons
2005-2006 Math-Science Team
The Spring Hill Math-Science Team hopes to build on its past success during the 2006-07 school year. With five state qualifiers from last year returning as its nucleus, the team should rank among the best in the state.

Seniors Brian Bass and Zach Barnhart serve as co-captains. Brian is the defending class AAA Number Sense State Champion and also qualified for last year's state meet in calculator applications and science. Zach is the defending regional champion in calculator and science, qualifying for state in both of those events as well as in number sense and mathematics by finishing as the runner-up at the regional meet. Other returning state qualifiers include Michael Bass, Jason Graham, and Shawn Davis.

The team is actively seeking new members and encourages those with an interest in math and science to join--especially incoming freshmen.

Weekly meetings will be held on Wednesday mornings in Mr. Gatons' classroom, S105. Students who are interested in joining the team but are unable to meet at that time should see Mr. Gatons at any time during the school day or before or after school.

The first major activity of the year is the UIL Student Activities Conference to be held on Saturday, September 23rd, at Tyler Jr. College. SHHS will host its 30th annual math-science meet on Saturday, December 2nd.

Theatre Club Gains Support of International Organization
submitted by Brad Harden

The Spring Hill Theatre Club is happy to announce that we are in the process of converting from a local theatre club into a Troupe of the International Thespian Society. What does this mean for our members? We will now have the support and resources of an international organization that promotes education and opportunities in the theatre. The International Thespian Society is an honorary organization compiled of student actors, pre-professional and professional actors, directors, and technicians. As members of our troupe Spring Hill students will be eligible to compete for scholarships, attend conventions and workshops, and have access to up-to-date information on educational and professional theatre information. Membership is open to all students who have a desire to participate and put forth the effort to earn the points required. Students are invited join us at 7:45 every other Thursday in the Little Theatre to learn how to earn points.

The first production for the 2006-2007 school year is A Golden Fleecing or The Undermining of Sarah Sweetflower's Sarsaparilla Saloon and Bridal Shoppe. This production is a wonderful Melodrama with plenty of opportunities for audience participation through "Booing, Hissing, Oooing, and Ahwwwing." And what Melodrama would be complete without an audience sing-along!!? Performance dates are set for October 6 & 7 at 7:00 PM and October 8 at 2:30 PM in the Little Theatre.

In October, we will have open auditions for a large-scale musical. At the request of many, and I mean many students, we will under take such a life-altering event. I will announce the musical in October.

Counselor News!
submitted by Tracy Dees

Spring Hill High School is seeing lots of new faces in the hallways this year.  We have 133 juniors.  Eleven are new to the district coming from lots of various places such as Germany , Thailand , Louisiana , Oklahoma , Canton , Marshall , Tyler , Longview , and Pine Tree.  The freshmen class is the highest enrollment with 149 students. Twenty-two are new to the district.  They are coming from Pennsylvania , Arkansas , Judson, Foster, Forest Park , Pine Tree, Hallsville, Hurst , Malakoff, Tatum, Marshall , Kilgore, The Trinity School of Texas, and Christian Heritage.  Welcome to Spring Hill High School !

Juniors are getting a head start on taking college classes this year.  Seventeen students took 1 or more college classes this summer at Kilgore College .  At least fifteen more are either enrolled in a college class this fall or plan to enroll in a college class during the Christmas mini or spring semesters.  That is something to be proud of!

PSAT, the Practice SAT, will be given on Wed. Oct. 18 at 8:30 in the auditorium.  This test is normed for juniors.  It will give students a predicted score for the real SAT.  Also, it is great practice for students to see the format of the test.  Most importantly, it puts you in the running for the National Merit Scholarship Program.  The test is only $13.00.  Please pay in cash or make check payable to Spring Hill ISD.  There is a sign up sheet on the front counter in the office.  Students must pay when they sign up for the test.  Freshmen and sophomores are welcome to take it but just be aware that your scores will be lower.

For freshmen and junior news, please go to Tracy Dees' webpage on the district website.
