Student Council

Student Council Wraps up Year
submitted by Carrie Jones for the May 2010 Newsletter

State Convention DelegatesStudent Council has had a great last nine weeks of school. SHHS sent four delegates to the Student Council State Convention in Arlington on April 10 to join with 4400 other students from Texas. At convention, our council won Sweepstakes-the highest award given at convention for service in the Environment, Drugs and Alcohol Awareness, Pride and Patriotism, and Community service. They also were named an Outstanding Student Council. Of the 1300 members of Texas Association of Student Councils only 10 received top 10 project awards. Spring Hill won one of those ten awards! We were so proud to be in Arlington representing our great school.

Powder Puff FootballThis nine weeks, student council teamed with NHS to raise $2050 for Relay for Life on April 30.  StuCo also hosted a powder puff football game on May 7. It was a great night to watch the boys cheer and coach and the girls play some football. The Juniors won, and $2575 was raised to fund future projects and donations to needy people and organizations.

StuCo members also went to Spring Forum in Texarkana, cleaned the highway, treated teachers during teacher appreciation week, wore blue for child abuse awareness, donated prom dresses, worked concession stands, and took next year's Freshmen on tours of the high school during Freshman Orientation.

Spring is nearly here, and Student Council is starting it off right with the Spring Forum taking place at Texarkana. The theme is Las Vegas, and our StuCo members have decided to go with the eloping marriage theme. Girls will wear veils and white shirts while boys will wear tuxedo shirts. However, it's not all fun and games. Student Council members plan to bond with members from neighboring schools and make a difference beyond the Spring Hill community. The district continues to work on the district project of raising money to build wells in Africa as well as other projects. Big changes and services are still to come for student council members. They also server in smaller ways such as helping with UIL meets, operating concession stands for track and the softball/baseball teams, and putting reminders to update inspection stickers on students' windshields. Members also participated in "Keeping Longview Beautiful" on February 20 by cleaning the waterway at Rotary Park. Student Council members and advisor Carrie Jones will continue to work hard this spring. Events to come include Relay for Life and the Student Council State Convention.

Student Council News

Last holiday season brought about feelings of joy and a need for not only receiving, but giving. At least, that’s what our Student Council believed. Every member contributed money to give to the families in need to make their Christmas extra special. Stuco went shopping for the families. Student Council member, Katie Clark said “I believe everyone should have a great Christmas”, which is the reason why many of the members decided to give for the holidays. Juniors continue to put up posters concerning safe driving on our hallway walls and fliers on students’ windshields. The Student Council also helped to serve in the Senior Citizen Luncheon and the Veterans Day Reception. Many of these students continued to work hard before their much-needed two week break.

StuCo recycle project

Student Council
submitted by Haley Allen for the October 2009 Newsletter

Student Council has been busy in September and October. They were involved with events such as the Education Foundation Dinner, Fall Forum at Liberty Eylau High School, Food Box contributions, AM Bucks Mud Volleyball Tournament, babysitting for PTA, morning announcements, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Volunteering for Debate and Volleyball tournaments at the high school, selling football programs, spirit weeks like twin day, recycling paper, and contributing to Hope’s closet. The Student Council served at the Education Foundation dinner. They were there when Mrs. Gillentine won her new Altima.

They also contributed to Food Box with canned foods they gathered at their meeting. Another event that StuCo participated in was a donation drive to Hope's Closet. Donations are still pouring in from the Spring Hill community. The final count on pounds of donations is growing.

Fall Forum was fun and exciting for Student Council as they learned how to become leaders of good character. Many Student Councils from other schools attended the event, and students were split into groups of students from other schools. They had a scavenger hunt together, and worked to win even though they didn’t know each other. They also participated in fun relays, but there was more to it than just games. All of the schools voted on a district project to build wells in Africa for the people with the difficulty of finding clean water.  A motivational speaker was invited to speak at the Forum and did a fabulous job reaching the students and teaching leadership skills.

The student council enjoyed getting muddy at the mud volleyball tournament that raised money for AMBUCS. Staying involved with volleyball, they volunteered to work two high school/junior high volleyball tournaments during October. The debate tournament that they worked at the high school was also fun.

StuCo presentation to Ms. GreenThe student council's most exciting project to date was the fun and fabulous fund raiser for our beloved Nancy Green, who is fighting breast cancer. Through the sale of "GREEN" shirts with her name on them, teachers paying to wear jeans, students paying to wear shorts, and donations they were able to raise $2300.00 in less than a week, and donations continue to come in. All Spring Hill campuses participated in the fundraiser. On Wednesday, October, 14, at 7:30 am students and faculty from all campuses surprised Ms. Green in the high school library in our shirts and presented her with her check. Local newspaper and television stations were present. The tears flowed. It was a priceless moment for all involved. Ms. Green seems truly StuCo members empty recycling binstouched and appreciative. We continue to pray for strength and healing for Ms. Green.

Another exciting project that Student Councilis working on is a paper recycling program at the high school. Stucco has partnered with PTA to gather paper to be recycled at East Texas Shredding. Colleen Helton gathers paper daily from classrooms and combines it in large receptacles. Then Kyle Akin and Logan Wallis drive the paper to the shredding company where it is shredded and recycled. There is currently no recycle company that will come to schools in East Texas, so StuCo is thankful that East Texas Shredding is working with them on this project.

The Student Council continues to work hard in helping with the community and inside the school. Upcoming events include Red Ribbon Week, and the traditional Fall Festival.

Student Council

StuCo in classroomBefore school even started, the Student Council at Spring Hill High School had already started working hard for the upcoming year. Every grade had a workshop for their committee, including various meetings for the executive officers; President- Carlee Wood, Vice President- Rachel Baker, Secretary- Dylin Moran, Treasurer- Gary Duncan, and Historian- Haley Allen. Each age group, freshman through seniors, worked hard in their summer workshops to come up with ideas for their committees; Freshman- Community Service, Sophomores- Energy and Environment, Juniors- DrugsAlcoholSafetyHealth, and Seniors-Pride and Patriotism .  They planned numerous events for the upcoming year, which included some events that will be repeated from last year. They will devote certain Monday mornings to meetings before school and will have a certain amount of hours to devote to the community or Spring Hill. The following upcoming events are: gift exchanges with other student councils, passing out programs at the rest of the home football games, the AMBucks Mud Volleyball Tournament on October 4, babysitting at the Primary Campus, a supply drive for Hope's Closet, motiviational announcements each day, and assisting with homecoming and spirit weeks.  This year will keep members of the Student Council busy. However, they are excited to work hard for their school and the community the way young leaders should.
