TO-DO List for Juniors

1.  Start your college search – read about majors and careers on www.collegeboard.com

2.  Over spring break or the summer…arrange to visit your top colleges (if you can) and be sure to make appointments ahead of time for a tour of the campus and set up time to visit with the financial aide officer or the Freshman academic advisor.

3.  Plan to sign up for either the ACT or SAT in April/May/June – get the study guide for the test you plan to take and begin preparing.  Remember, for the SAT you can only take either the SAT Reasoning test or up to three SAT subject tests in one day.  You cannot do both in the same day.  Find out from the college you plan to attend whether they require subject tests for college entrance.  Some do and some don’t.

4.  Prepare for the SAT by taking a full-length official practice test and get a practice test score report by visiting the SAT Preparation Center at www.collegeboard.com   You can also get free ACT/SAT test prep tutorials or other helpful information by visiting the following websites: www.number2.com,  www.act.org, www.schoolguides.org, www.collegeboard.com , www.fastweb.com , www.fafsa.ed.gov, www.ed.gov/thinkcollege , www.collegeprep101.com, www.collegeanswerguy.com, www.collegefortexans.com

It has been suggested to take both ACT and SAT at least once to see which one you will do better on.  ACT has English, reading, math, science reasoning, and an optional essay.  SAT sections are math, critical reading, and writing.

5.  Students who qualify for the free/reduced lunch program can use a fee waiver for the ACT or SAT tests.  This can be used twice for each test.

CHANGE TO THE TOP 10% RULING:   The University of Texas at Austin will automatically admit all eligible 2011 summer/fall freshman applicants who rank within the top 8 percent of their high school graduating classes, with remaining spaces to be filled through holistic review.  William Powers Jr., president of the university, said that automatically admitting students in the top 8 percent of their high school graduating class to the 2011 entering freshman class would fill 75 percent of available spaces. A new state law, Senate Bill 175, passed by the 81st Legislature, modified the university's admissions program, which previously had been required to automatically admit students in the top 10 percent of their high school class.  Under the new law, the university is to admit automatically enough students to fill 75 percent of available spaces set aside for Texas residents in an entering freshman class, beginning with the 2011 summer/fall class.  Students who rank in the top 10% of their high school class are automatically admitted to any public university in Texas EXCEPT FOR UT AUSTIN.

THEA

Free online SAT and ACT Prep courses.  Every high school student in Texas can prepare for college admissions tests.  Free access to ACT and SAT test prep tutorials, practice sessions, timed sample tests, a vocabulary builder, and test-taking tips.  The tutorials address each subject area and content category covered by SAT and ACT, and typically contain between 30 and 90 minutes of instructional materials each.  Practice sessions provide individualized feedback for each incorrect and correct answer.  The vocabulary builder contains over 1600 words, and like the practice sessions, adapt to each student’s ability level.  Students can access the website through http://www.number2.com

PEER ASSISTANT – Seniors are eligible to have two class periods assigned as peer assistants to teachers or office staff.  Students must initiate this process and provide the counselor with a note signed by the teacher giving you permission to be assigned as a PA.  No credit is awarded for being a PA but it does count towards your attendance.

Career Preparation (WORK PROGRAM) – applications are available through Ms. Whittington.  This must be filled out and submitted by the deadline in order to be considered for the work program.  Criteria looked at will be grades, attendance, and credits.  Seniors who are accepted into the work program will be enrolled into the Career Preparation class in addition to all required classes needed for graduation.  This work program class will/can give you PE waivers for each semester enrolled, but cannot count as your technology credit.  You will also earn up to 3 credits (1 ½ Fall/1 ½ Spring) for working a minimum of 15 hours per week.

KJC DUAL CREDIT COURSES:

ECON 2301 – replaces high school economics

GOVT 2305 – replaces high school government

ENGL 1301 – replaces the 1st semester of high school senior English

ENGL 1302 – replaces the 2nd semester of high school senior English

SPCH 1315 – replaces high school speech class

Steps to take if you plan to pursue dual credit courses:

1.  Apply to Kilgore College online (www.kilgore.edu)

2.  Find out if you are THEA Exempt.  If you are, you will need to take your TAKS Results, ACT, or SAT Results to KJC.  If not, sign up to take the THEA or ACCUPLACER test over at Kilgore College Testing Center – 903-983-8215 or call KJC-Longview at 903-983-8281 to schedule an appointment M-F at 5pm.  .

3.  Have your counselor send an official copy of your high school transcript over to KJC-Admissions

4.  Request and fill out an “early admissions form” (from your counselor) and have your parents sign it.  This is the form that you will take with you to actually register for the course.

5.  Register for the course(s) either in Kilgore at the Duvall Student Center (Jeanna Centers-903-983-8202) or if you are taking a course at the KJC-Longview campus you can register for your course at that campus.

6.  Pay for the course(s) that you registered and bring a copy of the “Paid Receipt” to your counselor as Proof of your enrollment in the dual credit course.  If you do not bring a copy of the paid receipt, we will put you in the SHHS equivalent course.

CREDIT RECOVERY:

If you need to recover credits due to failure of courses there are several ways in which this can be accomplished:

1.  Attend summer school at one of the following facilities:  Spring Hill High School (Math/Science ONLY), Longview High School, Kilgore High School, Pine Tree High School, and East Texas Charter School.  This costs around $150 per semester.  Summer school schedules will be available in late April in the high school office.  Registration is handled on your own.  Remember….YOU need to make yourself aware of all graduation requirements so that if you must recover a credit due to failure, you take care of it in the summer.

2.  Take a credit by exam – These exams are ordered through Texas Tech University-Extended Studies (www.ttu.edu) and cost $30 each.

3.  Take a correspondence course through Texas Tech University-Extended Studies.  Each semester costs $125.

4.  The last option (and worst) would be to retake the course during the following school year knowing that you will have to “double up” on the courses if it is part of the 4 core course load.
