o       CHANGE TO THE TOP 10% RULING:   — The University of Texas at Austin will automatically admit all eligible 2011 summer/fall freshman applicants who rank within the top 8 percent of their high school graduating classes, with remaining spaces to be filled through holistic review.  William Powers Jr., president of the university, said that automatically admitting students in the top 8 percent of their high school graduating class to the 2011 entering freshman class would fill 75 percent of available spaces. A new state law, Senate Bill 175, passed by the 81st Legislature, modified the university's admissions program, which previously had been required to automatically admit students in the top 10 percent of their high school class.  Under the new law, the university is to admit automatically enough students to fill 75 percent of available spaces set aside for Texas residents in an entering freshman class, beginning with the 2011 summer/fall class.

o         United States Senate Youth Leadership Program  - The Texas United States Senate Youth Program is for high school students who demonstrate leadership and an interest in government. Students must be a junior or senior in High School and hold an elected office that included the vote of the student body.  The complete details for the program is located at internet link http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=3406.  In 1962, the United States Senate voted unanimously to endorse a nationwide youth program that would bring high school students to Washington, DC for a brief introduction to the functions of the federal government -- particularly the Senate.

The program was created and authorized by Senate Resolution 234 and has been reauthorized ever since. The original resolution specified that the program be "supported by private funds with no expense to the federal government". As a result, The William Randolph Hearst Foundation assumed financial support of the program and continues its sponsorship today. The Foundation states that "it is in the public interest to encourage these outstanding young people to continue their educational development". The Annual United States Senate Youth Program authorizes the selection of 104 student delegates, two from each state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Office of Dependents Schools (DoDDS). The delegates are immersed in Washington activities throughout their week-long stay, including visits to the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, and the Pentagon. Delegates hear major addresses by senators, cabinet members, and officials of the Department of State and the Department of Defense, as well as other federal departments. Additional activities include visits to the various Smithsonian Museums.

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation pays all expenses for the week-long Washington stay, including transportation, hotel accommodations, and meals. This year’s program will be held March 6 – 13, 2010.  Each delegate is awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The students are chaperoned by members of all branches of the US military.

If you have any questions please contact the program managers whose addresses are located at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=3406.
