SEPTEMBER 2010 NEWSLETTER-

TO-DO List for Seniors:

1.  APPLY TO THE COLLEGE YOU PLAN ON ATTENDING – read about majors and careers on www.collegeboard.com. WWW.APPLYTEXAS.ORG –website used by most 2 year and 4 year public schools in Texas.  www.commonapp.org – used for most private school across the nation.

2.  During the fall…arrange to visit your top colleges (if you can) and be sure to make appointments ahead of time for a tour of the campus and set up time to visit with the financial aide officer or the Freshman academic advisor.  A COLLEGE DAY FORM IS REQUIRED!  See your counselor.

3.  Plan to sign up for either the ACT or SAT in Sept / Oct only if you haven’t taken one of these tests or you were dissatisfied with your score – get the study guide for the test you plan to take and begin preparing.  Remember, for the SAT you can only take either the SAT Reasoning test or up to three SAT subject tests in one day.  You cannot do both in the same day.  Find out from the college you plan to attend whether they require subject tests for college entrance.  Some do and some don’t.

4.  Prepare for the SAT by taking a full-length official practice test and get a practice test score report by visiting the SAT Preparation Center at www.collegeboard.com   You can also get free ACT/SAT test prep tutorials or other helpful information by visiting the following websites: www.number2.com,  www.act.org, www.schoolguides.org, www.collegeboard.com , www.fastweb.com , www.fafsa.ed.gov, www.ed.gov/thinkcollege , www.collegeprep101.com, www.collegeanswerguy.com, www.collegefortexans.com (It has been suggested to take both ACT and SAT at least once to see which one you will do better on.  ACT has English, reading, math, science reasoning, and an optional essay.  SAT sections are math, critical reading, and writing.)

5.  Students who qualify for the free/reduced lunch program can use a fee waiver for the ACT or SAT tests.  This can be used twice for each test.

6. Senior Conferences will begin in October!!!  Sign up folder will be on the counter in the office starting middle of September, it will also be passed around in English 4, and announcements will be made as a reminder to sign up for your Senior Conference!

7.  It has been recommended to me that all seniors and their parents go ahead and apply for a PIN number online at: www.pin.ed.gov.  You can use the same email account for the PIN.  If you already have your pin when fill out the FAFSA online, then you can sign and your parents can sign using the PIN number and the college you send it to (electronically) will have it in one week.  If you do a paper copy of the FAFSA and “snail- mail” it, the time it takes to get to the university could be up to 2 months.  The FAFSA can be completed online beginning in January at www.fafsa.ed.gov.   This is FREE!  Remember, if it costs money to get something for FREE, it is probably not worth it!

8. Senior Athletes:  Register online with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you want to play college athletics.  www.eligibilitycenter.org   In order to participate in athletics and receive athletically-based financial aid, you must register with the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse and meet eligibility standards. If you wish to register on-line with the Clearinghouse, you must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number and a VISA or MasterCard. The cost is $50.  Also, if you take the ACT or SAT, be sure to have your scores sent to the Clearinghouse, which is code: 9999.

9. Senior Males:  You MUST register with the Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday.  IT IS THE LAW!! Now, men can submit their registration information when they turn 17 years and 3 months and will automatically be registered upon turning 18.  Pick up registration forms at the post office or at www.sss.gov

10.  Mrs. Childers will have your updated transcript/academic history in her office on SEPT 7th.  If you haven’t already picked up your academic history please go by and see her.  Your summer college courses and AP exams have already been added to the academic history.  If you need me to send your high school transcript out to the colleges that you are applying, please fill out the form (located on my door) and submit to me!

11. When you get accepted to a college, bring Mrs. Childers your acceptance letter so she can post it in the monthly newsletter and on her website.

12. Most 4-year Texas public universities use the Texas Common Application for Freshman Admission.  You can apply at multiple universities using this one application.  You can apply online at www.applytexas.org

13.  CHANGE TO THE TOP 10% RULING:   The University of Texas at Austin will automatically admit all eligible 2011 summer/fall freshman applicants who rank within the top 8 percent of their high school graduating classes, with remaining spaces to be filled through holistic review.  William Powers Jr., president of the university, said that automatically admitting students in the top 8 percent of their high school graduating class to the 2011 entering freshman class would fill 75 percent of available spaces. A new state law, Senate Bill 175, passed by the 81st Legislature, modified the university's admissions program, which previously had been required to automatically admit students in the top 10 percent of their high school class.  Under the new law, the university is to admit automatically enough students to fill 75 percent of available spaces set aside for Texas residents in an entering freshman class, beginning with the 2011 summer/fall class.  Students who rank in the top 10% of their high school class are automatically admitted to any public university in Texas EXCEPT FOR UT AUSTIN.

The class of 2011 has 125 students so those students who rank from #1 – 12 are in the top 10%!  WAY TO GO!!!!!!!

Texas A&M University (College Station)Howdy Camp is a student-run orientation program for new Aggies planning to attend Texas A&M University in the spring semester. Over two thousand students have benefited from this program since its inception in 1991. Howdy Camp includes transfer students as well as freshmen students and is the spring semester’s equivalent to Fish Camp and T-Camp.  Howdy Camp is held over a three-day period in January immediately before the spring semester begins. During this time, new Aggies are introduced to the many traditions, indescribable spirit, and customs of Aggieland. Speakers and special interest programs are brought in to inform students of the endless activities and opportunities available to them at A&M and in the Bryan-College Station community.  Current students serve as counselors to the new students. They share their personal experiences and actively encourage campers to interact with one another so that by the end of camp, they will be more comfortable with their transition and have an extensive network of friends. Counselors serve as friends and mentors to the students far beyond Howdy Camp.
