Email
Hoax
Most of us receive email from well intentioned
friends that contain warnings about virus attacks, scams, security threats,
etc., and we are asked to pass these on to others. Most of these warnings are false or
hoaxes. By passing them on to all your
friends and relatives you are wasting your time and clogging the internet with
useless traffic. If you want to check
whether or not an email warning you receive is factual, you can click on the
websites shown below for verification.
Each site maintains a list of email hoaxes, urban legends, and other
false information spread via the internet.

Phishing
Many of us are familiar with spam email which is
email sent from some company or business wanting us to purchase
some product. The From: address on the email
will sometime appear to be from an individual or maybe a recognizable
name and so we open the message. Sometime
these typed messages can contain a virus, but usually is an advertisement
for a product that we don't want or one that we
don't want our children to see. The latest type spam messages are called
"Phishing".
This means the sender is "fishing" for some personal information from
you, such as passwords or account
numbers dealing with monetary transactions.
This has been showing up lately with Ebay customers
and other on-line
buying sites. Unless you can verify that a
company that you do business with is trying to contact you, do not give out
this type personal information on the
internet. These phishing messages apparently
contain graphics that look like actual
company trademarks, logos, etc., so you should be
cautious of these type emails. For more information on this subject click
