Consumer & Family Science Class Expectations and
Procedures
Every student that walks through my door can be
successful in class. It will take effort and work on your part. Do
what is required each day and the weeks/semesters will take care of
themselves. It is your job to KEEP UP with due dates
and assignments.
Grading Policy
Major Grades will earn 50% of the semester average. Tests and
projects will earn a major test grade(s). Other types of assignments may
be used as major grades - if so you will always be told in advance.
Daily grades will earn the remaining 50%. These grades will be homework, daily
work, group participation, lab work,etc.
Daily quiz grades will be recorded as two daily grades. Each of you will
have 2 coupons to attach to late daily /homework.
Write your name on these. They will not be replaced if lost.
Late work will not be accepted unless a coupon is used.
If you score below a 70 on a major test, you will have the privilege
of restesting. In order to retest, you must invest 15 minutes
with me either before or after school to review/clarify the material
being retested . During this time we will evaluate what you need to study
or do differently in order to do your best when you retest. The
highest grade you can attain on a retest is a 70 .
Projects that earn test grades will not be accepted after the third day
they are late. A 15 point penalty will deducted for each day the
project is late. Saturday and Sunday are not exempt. Example: if a
project was due on Friday but turned in on Monday there would be a
30 point late penalty.
Make Up Work
If absent, find out what was missed. This should be done before or after
school. Check the school web page for my lesson plans. Work should
be completed according to the guidelines below.
Daily assignments or tests will result in zero's if not completed
in the allotted time. If there are unusual circumstances see me to
make other arrangements.
1
absence = 1 day to get work made up
2
day absence = 2 days to get work in
3
days absence = deadline set by teacher

successful semester!
Dee Ann Coker
"When am I ever going to REALLY use this " isn't something I get
asked a lot as a teacher of C& FS. Skills are generally
learned today and used tomorrow (if not today!) Courses are
designed to give young adults the tools they need to face the challenging roles
of family member, wage earner and community leader. Between family, school,
work, and community involvement everyone is a bit stretched these days. That's
where these classes come in. My goal is to help each individual become
more confident in their abilities while mastering skills that will have big
payoff both now and for years to come. Check out our courses-there's
something on the menu for everyone!
A
La Carte Course Selections
Personal & Family Development: ( two semesters 9-12th grade)
Definitely the "samplers platter"- students get a slice of each
course offered from the main menu. Fast paced and fun describe this
foundational class which covers the basics of child care & development,
family dynamics, clothing selection and care, food preparation , nutrition,
personal success, interior design and management. It's an ideal
first class to get a taste of what family & consumer science is
all about. Most students definitely come back for a second helping of
more specialized classes listed below.
Interior Design: ( one semester 10-12th grade)
So, you finally have a place of your own. Whether a dorm room, cracker box
space, or mansion we can help! Decorating will be a snap after learning the
basics of design, color, decorating, furniture selection and arrangement. You
will complete several design projects while having lots of fun in the process
of learning tips and techniques that will make the most of available
space. Yes, Interior Design is for everyone.
Food Science and Nutrition :( one semester 10-12th grade)
Live of junk food? Think a balanced diet is driving through Taco Bell, Sonic
and Burger King all in one evening? Ever wonder why you have no energy and are
having trouble with your weight...too much or not enough? Are your cooking
skills limited to boxed macaroni & cheese, Ramin noodles and jello? Welcome
to Food Science & Nutrition! This class is packed with what you need to
choose a healthy diet and lifestyle that can make a difference in how you look
and feel. Lab practice and demonstrations provide hands on food
labs. By the way..... did I mention we eat those lab practices and demos?
BAM!!!
Preparation for Parenting:( one semester 11-12th)
Wanted : Mature, responsible, financially secure individuals to give up
personal freedoms to care for a child( or children) 24/7. No pay, company
benefits or 401K's. Who in their right mind would respond? Probably you
one day! After completing this class students will know both the
responsibilities and rewards of job that demands total commitment with no
pay for years on end.
(do hugs and kisses count?) PFP makes students aware of the critical decision
to parent and the toll it can take financially, socially and
emotionally. If parenting is in your future this is the class for you.
Child Development: ( one semester 10-12th grade)
Helpless, sweet, cute, curious, messy, loud, independent, selfish, negative,
fun......we're talking children here right? This is designed to
help students learn what makes children tick during each major stage of development
so they will be better equipped to understand them while meeting their
needs. Students are introduced to the emotional, intellectual, physical
and social development of children from birth through age six. The class is
excellent preparation for students who plant to work with young children as a
career.
