CHEMISTRY

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

CHEMISTRY: Chemistry is a process of inquiry that studies matter, its composition and structure, and the changes which matter undergoes. It is a body of systematized knowledge gained from observation, study, and experimentation; it is both an intellectual and experimental science. Primary goals of this course are to increase students' awareness of the importance and pervasiveness of chemicals and chemical processes in our world, and to develop conceptual understanding of chemical principles, proficiency in mathematical skills related to solving chemical problems and in process skills including manipulating, classifying, observing, inferring, predicting, explaining, analyzing, and synthesizing. Topics of study include: matter and energy, phases of matter, structure of matter and periodicity, quantum mechanics and bonding, chemical reactions and equilibrium, water chemistry, chemical kinetics and thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. It will be necessary for students to have a scientific calculator for this class.

ABSENCE POLICY AND MAKE-UP WORK:

1.    Class attendance is mandatory; you must present an admit slip upon returning to class after an absence, or you will be sent to the office to obtain one (and receive an unexcused tardy).

2.    All work due the day you were absent is due the day you return to class.

3.    Make-up work must be discussed with your teacher before/after school during tutorials.

4.    NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

5.    If you are absent the day before a previously announced test, and return the day of the test, you will be required to take the exam. Special circumstances will be discussed with your teacher. Make-up tests will not be the same as the regularly scheduled test.   If a student is going to be absent the day of a test they should make arrangements to take test before they leave campus.

GRADING POLICY:

HONORS

1.    The test average will count 75% of your overall average; the daily grade average will make up the remaining 25%.

2.    Daily grades consist of graded homework, class assignments, announced and unannounced quizzes, and lab assignments.

3.    Deficiency reports will be sent to any student whose average falls to 75% or below, and parent calls will be made.

REGULAR

4.    The test average will count 67% of your overall average; the daily grade average will make up the remaining 33%.

5.    Daily grades consist of graded homework, class assignments, announced and unannounced quizzes, and lab assignments.

6.    Deficiency reports will be sent to any student whose average falls to 75% or below, and parent calls will be made.

LAB FEE

The Spring Hill HS Science Department is asking that all science students pay a lab fee of $5.00.  If you wish to write a check please make the check out to Spring Hill ISD.  Lab fees will be used to purchase supplies such as batteries, Chemistry Helper periodic table and is a glassware replacement fee.  Students should be bringing home a letter about this fee so that parents can read more about it.  Please e-mail me if you have any questions.

TUTORIALS

Please come in for tutorials before or after school if you are having trouble in class.  Tutorials are Monday – Friday beginning at 7:35.  After school on Tuesdays only until  4:15.

Summer Assignment for Advanced Chemistry!

1)    Memorize the first 54 elements of the periodic table (name and symbol).  Be sure and learn how to spell each element.  A test over these elements will be given the second full day of class. Extra summer assignments will be left on the front counter at the high school office.

2)     Review the handouts picked up on significant figures and rounding we will begin the first day with these topics.

AP BIOLOGY

I am very excited about this new class at Spring Hill High School!  AP Biology is a very challenging course but one that I think you will find rewarding.

Summer Assignment:

Be sure and check out the AP Campbell Biology textbook before summer starts. You must read the first 3 chapters and answer the questions that you picked up at the meeting.  If you didn’t pick up the questions then check with the front office there are extra copies on the front counter.  Remember the first day of class you will have a quiz over these first 3 chapters be prepared for multiple choice as well as free response type questions.  Also remember to collect your rolly pollies/pillbugs. Happy Summer!!
