CHEMISTRY
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
CHEMISTRY: Chemistry is a process of inquiry that studies matter, its
composition and structure, and the changes which matter undergoes. It is a body
of systematized knowledge gained from observation, study, and experimentation;
it is both an intellectual and experimental science. Primary goals of this
course are to increase students' awareness of the importance and pervasiveness
of chemicals and chemical processes in our world, and to develop conceptual
understanding of chemical principles, proficiency in mathematical skills
related to solving chemical problems and in process skills including
manipulating, classifying, observing, inferring, predicting, explaining,
analyzing, and synthesizing. Topics of study include: matter and energy, phases
of matter, structure of matter and periodicity, quantum mechanics and bonding,
chemical reactions and equilibrium, water chemistry, chemical kinetics and
thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. It will be necessary
for students to have a scientific calculator for this class.

REGULAR
LAB FEE
The Spring Hill HS Science Department is
asking that all science students pay a lab fee of $5.00. If you wish to write a check please make the
check out to Spring Hill ISD. Lab fees
will be used to purchase supplies such as batteries, goggles, gloves, and
household items that are often used in the classroom. Students should be bringing home a letter
about this fee so that parents can read more about it. Please e-mail me if you have any questions.
HONORS CHEMISTRY
If you are taking honors chemistry this
year you will be required to purchase a chemistry software package that will be
used by the student at home. We will refer
to this as “electronic homework”.
Students will keep this software after the course is finished. I believe this will be an excellent addition
to our honors program to help students.
This software is even used at some universities and would be a great
review for students who go on to take chemistry in college. The software is $20.00 checks should be
written to Spring Hill ISD.

TAKS INFO.
All students will be required to make a TAKS
notebook this semester. The objective of
this notebook is to aid students in organizing study materials for the Science
TAKS. Each student must provide their
own 3 ring binder (new or used) that is solely dedicated to TAKS. This notebook will be left in the room along
with their TAKS workbook. As notes and
practice problems for each objective are given student will file these papers
in their notebook by objectives. When
the notebook is complete it will be taken up for a test grade. Students may then keep their notebooks to
review at home before the TAKS. Please
be encouraging your student to pay attention and work hard to
review for this important test remember juniors are required to pass
this test before they can receive their diploma!! Information about tutorials will be posted as
soon as it is available. Students may
also access several websites to practice at home. One site is studyisland.com.

CHEMISTRY ELECTRONIC HOMEWORK
Tutorials completed with the software ChemSkill
Foundations will be referred to as “Electronic HomeworK”. Students have been given an
sheet with due dates for assigned tutorials.
Students should plan wisely and work on tutorials ahead of time in case
of problems. If you are unable to print
out gradebook then students should save their data on
a floppy disc or flashdrive or e-mail me their gradebook page. If
you need help with this process please let me know before due dates so that we
may address the problem. Homework that
is late will be -10 points per day late.
The school computer lab has 5 computers with this software loaded if you
have a technical problem with your computer at home it is your responsibility
to come in before/after school to use the lab.
Students who wish to use the lab must get the CD from me in order to
access the program. Current due dates
