WHAT JOBS MATCH MY ABILITIES?    AIMS:  Aptitude Inventory Measurement Service.  An intensive testing service most often used by high school juniors and seniors to provide information about which vocations match your aptitudes.  This service, based in Dallas, will be offering sessions at TJC in April.  The fee is $800.  Applications, with a deposit of $100 should by mailed by March 10.  Each person MUST attend April 19 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with a 1 hour lunch break.  Additionally, the student and at least one parent must return for a ½ day session either April 20th, 26th, or 27th.  For more information:  www.aimstesting.org or see Mrs. Lindsey for an application and to look at the program brochure.

FAFSA:  It has been recommended to me that all seniors and their parents go ahead and apply for a PIN number online at: www.pin.ed.gov.  You can use the same email account for the PIN.  If you already have your pin when you fill out the FAFSA online, then you can sign in and your parents can sign in using the PIN number and the college you send it to (electronically) will have it in one week.  If you do a paper copy of the FAFSA and “snail- mail” it, the time it takes to get to the university could be up to 2 months.  The FAFSA can be completed online beginning in January at www.fafsa.ed.gov.   This is FREE!  Remember, if it costs money to get something for FREE, it is probably not worth it!

*** Keep in mind that financial aid and scholarships are awarded on a “First come – first serve” basis.  So please don’t delay applying to the school(s) of your choice.

Senior Athletes:  Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you want to play college athletics.  http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/ncaa/NCAA/common/index.html

In order to participate in athletics and receive athletically-based financial aid, you must register with the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse and meet eligibility standards. If you wish to register on-line with the Clearinghouse, you must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number and a VISA or MasterCard. The cost is $50.  See Mrs. Burns if you want a hard copy of the form to fill out.  Also, if you take the ACT or SAT, be sure to have your scores sent to the Clearinghouse, which is code: 9999.

Senior Males:  You MUST register with the Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday.  IT IS THE LAW!! Now, men can submit their registration information when they turn 17 years and 3 months and will automatically be registered upon turning 18.  Pick up registration forms at the post office or at www.sss.gov

TEXAS COMMON APPLICATION:  Most  2-year and 4-year public universities use the Texas Common Application for Freshman Admission.  You can apply at multiple universities using this one application.  You can apply using a hard copy (available on the shelf outside the counselor’s office) or apply online at www.applytexas.org

AP Students:  To find out if your college will accept a 3, 4, or 5 and which courses you will get credit for, log on to www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy.   Click on “AP Credit Policy Info”, type in your college’s name, click on the college, and click on “Click here for this Institution’s AP credit and placement Policy on the Web.”   The Texas Education Agency is once again assuming $30 of the cost for students for each test.  The general cost to you will be $50 per test.  See your AP teacher for further information.   AP tests will be given in May according to the following schedule:

Monday, May 5:  U.S Government and Politics

            Wednesday, May 7:  Calculus AB

            Thursday, May 8: English Literature
