Mockingbird, Great Expectations, and Romeo and Juliet with
you. We also must work on our writing and grammar skills and prepare for
the TAKS Reading Test. Don't panic; I will
make it as painless as possible!

ENGLISH I COURSE DESCRIPTION
In English I, we study short stories, drama,
novels, poetry, and nonfiction. We also take a good look at grammar, usage, and
the mechanics of our language. We will study various vocabulary lists, as well
as prepare for the TAKS Reading Test, which is given in the spring.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
Three-ring slicker with 1 1/2" rings
Wide-ruled notebook paper (No college-ruled or
paper torn from a spiral, please)
One (1) one subject spiral notebook (70-100
pages) - this spiral will be used for a LESSON PLAN BOOK and needs to be used
only in English I
Blue or black pens
Red pens
Pencils for Scantron
tests
Highlighters (2)
3 x 5 index cards (200)
Pencil pouch for pens, index cards, etc.
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT GRADING PROCEDURE:
Each daily grade counts once;
each major test grade counts twice. Note that it is not the average of all daily grades that counts once,
nor, is it the average of all major grades that counts twice. Instead, each
individual assignment is recorded once or twice, depending on whether it is a
daily grade or major test grade.
LATE WORK POLICY
Late work is ONLY accepted if a student has an
absence or absences that affect the deadline of the assignment. Some
assignments given in advance will maintain their deadlines, and students will
be held responsible when they return to school. For example, if a student is
absent on the day that an assignment is due, he or she is responsible for
submitting that assignment upon his or her return to school.
MAKEUP WORK IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY
If a student is absent from class, it is
HIS/HER responsibility to find out what was missed ON THE DAY HE/SHE RETURNS TO
SCHOOL during tutorial in Mrs. McGarvey's classroom
(3:15-3:45). All makeup assignments, tests, and tutorials are done starting at
*****Makeup work should be completed as soon as
possible (i.e. 1 absence = 1 day makeup time; 2 days absence = 2 days makeup
time; 3 days absence = deadline set by teacher)
