Student Expectations

  1. Be Respectful

You will respect me, your classmates, and the school.  You can demonstrate this by using proper manners, being encouraging to one another, and taking pride in the way that you act.

  1. Be Responsible

Please be seated when the tardy bell rings. Have your materials ready and cease talking when I begin class. Homework is due when the tardy bell rings unless I tell you otherwise.

I strongly recommend that you take notes and copy all examples I give during class, as these are very beneficial when doing your homework.

.

Complete all assignments on time.  No late work will be accepted with the exception of those who have been absent.

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed. Get caught up as quickly as possible. Remember, you can also check the school web site for lesson plans. (www.springhill.esc7.net)

  1. Work Towards Your Class Goals

Work on assignments after explanation, in your group, or at home.  Do not waste any time you have in class to work on assignments.  I don’t want you to just “get by”, I want you to work on raising your expectations.

  1. Follow the Guidelines in the Student Handbook

  1. Do Your Personal Best Each Day

This will be expected in the way that you act, do homework, listen, participate in discussion, interact with classmates, and so on.

Homework Help

Our new text book is fantastic at giving you references to help you with your homework.  You can also go online to http://go.hrw.com/gopages/ma.html and receive video recordings of lessons that you might have missed or need a little more help in.  This on-line homework tutor also gives explanations for some problems in the book.  It is an amazing tool.  Use it!

Tutorials

I am available for tutoring most mornings from 7:40 – 8:00.  Please know that I am always willing to help!

Grading

The high school Math department grades 2/3 major test average and 1/3 daily average. In Geometry, you will have at least 3 major tests each 9 weeks. Each student will be required to complete 1 - 3 projects per semester. These projects will be counted as major exams.

Progress reports are issued each 3 weeks for anyone with an average of 75 or below.

The 9-week average is calculated by multiplying the test average by 2, adding the daily average, and dividing by 3.  This is the grade that determines eligibility for UIL and extra-curricular activities.

The semester grade is calculated by multiplying the average of your 2 nine weeks grades by 6, adding the semester exam, and dividing by 7.

The final grade is calculated by adding the 1st and 2nd semester grades and dividing by 2. This is the grade that determines credit for a course.

Re-Teach/Re-Test

Students in regular math class will be allowed to come in before or after school and make corrections to their test in order to earn up to ½ the lost points back.  Honors classes will be allowed to do the same, but they will only be able to earn Ό of the lost points back.  This must be done within the time I designate.   Be prepared for the original test!

Course Outline

This is vulnerable to change due to many different circumstances.  However, I thought that a rough picture of what to expect might help.

We will be doing a Countdown to TAKS series each week.

There will most likely be a mandatory benchmark tests given that will count in the 2nd and 3rd marking periods.  I will also make optional projects available from time to time.
