SYLLABUS FOR BCIS I

MICROSOFT WORD-WORD-PROCESSING

Students will learn everything needed to know to create and format Word documents.  Many assignments will apply different writing techniques: persuasive, narrative, editorial, etc...



MICROSOFT ACCESS

Students will create, update, format, filter, and query access tables, as well as merge Access with Word to create multiple documents.



MICROSOFT EXCEL

Students will create, format spreadsheets, as well as learn formulas and functions that will help them with all aspects of their lives.



MICROSOFT POWERPOINT

Students will learn to storyboard and format PowerPoint presentations, and make presentations to the class.



MEDIA MART-BUSINESS SIMULATION

Students will integrate all programs above to run a fictional business.



CAREER RESEARCH PAPER

Students will research a career on the Internet according to specific thesis statement.  They will write a research paper, complete with Works Cited page and Parenthetical Citation.



INTERNET

Students will be completing various mini-research assignments on the Internet throughout the course.

Financial Management

         Develop money management goals
         Identify elements of and create personal income statement
         Identify elements of and create personal balance sheet
         List techniques of wise money management
         Learn the steps in the budgeting process
         Understand budget categories
         List financial planning steps
         Learn how a financial plan is implemented and its advantages


Our Economic System

         Understand difference between wants and needs
         Identify three kinds of resources and examples of each
         Understand the basic economic problem
         State the three economic questions each society must ask
         Describe and explain the three types of economic systems

         Identify the three economic roles played by each person

          proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, cooperatives, and franchises

Understand the difference between foreign trade and domestic trade, and why

         we need both

Describe how tariffs, quotas, and embargoes affect world trade
Understand advantages and disadvantages of world trade

Consumers in Our Economy

         Describe the role of the consumer in our economic system
         Define comparison shopping
         Understand consumer rights and responsibilities
         Explain express and implied warranties
         List causes of inflation and deflation.
         Explain three actions the government can take to control inflation or deflation

Financial Institutions

         List services provided by banks
         Explain how to open and learn how to maintain a checking account

         Understand the importance of safety and yield
         Describe what is meant by liquidity
         Give examples of how savings help our economy
         Explain how to open and use a savings account
         Understand NOW accounts, CD's, and IRA's
         Give reasons why organizations sell bonds
         Understand the difference between stocks and bonds
         Describe investment services offered by brokers
         Describe costs associated with owning a house
         Differentiate between conventional mortgages and ARMs
         Understand commodities and   collectibles as forms of investment


Protection from economic loss

         Understand each of the six categories of vehicle insurance
         Explain the need for property insurance
         Explain what life insurance is designed to do
         Understand why health insurance is important
