Counselor’s Corner

“It is my personal approach that creates the climate.  It is my daily mood that makes the weather…I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous.  I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.  I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.  In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized…”

About the Intermediate School Counselor

My name is Tina Engledow. I grew up in White Oak, Texas, moved out of state for 9 years, and returned this past year.  Over a 13 year teaching span I taught in grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.  In 2004, I graduated with a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling and received my licensure to work as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).  From 2004 - 2008, I was a mental health counselor.  In August 2008, I decided to return to the Educational field working as a School Counselor.  I am very excited about being here at Spring Hill ISD.  It is a wonderful place to work.  I will begin my second year at Spring Hill Intermediate in August 2009.

What Does the School Counselor Do?

·        I am available to all students when they need a caring ear to listen or a calming voice to help their day go a little smoother.

·        I assist teachers with issues that may arise in the classroom that requires counseling.

·        I work with individual students and small groups.

·        Parents and teachers can refer students to see me or a student may request individual counseling as well.

·        I am available for parent conferences regarding family changes, academics, behavioral issues, information on available resources in the area, testing and interpretation of testing data, and any other concerns in regards to their child.

·        I go into each classroom and teach Character Education to all grade levels.  We use a program called, “Coreessentials” that is donated by our local Chick-Fila restaurant.  The program focuses on a different character trait each month and lessons are based on that month’s trait.  Students are recognized for exhibiting the character trait of the month and receive “Caught you Being Good” tickets.  There ticket is put in the jar for a weekly drawing for special prizes.
