Reading and writing opens a world of
opportunities for imagination and fun, but there comes a time when reading and
writing essential words can become challenging for children. These essential words, also referred to as
high-frequency or sight words, are words children encounter frequently in
reading and writing, such as there, when, said, are and because.
In class, your child is learning
strategies to help him or her become more familiar with these essential
words. These strategies are based on a
multisensory approach that encourages children to use all five senses. Children will directly interact with words by
printing them in shaving cream, making them out of dough and clay, and hearing
and identifying them in songs and poems.
A list of sight words are sent home each
6 weeks. Please practice these words
until they become automatic without sounding out. We will be sending home activities to help learn
these words. These activities will help
your child become an enthusiastic and successful reader and writer. Happy word learning!
